She was 74 years old, and while the cause of death has not been disclosed, she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this past June. While we disagreed with her politically, we want to send our condolences to her family and friends during this time of grief. When an incumbent member of Congress dies or is otherwise unable to fulfill their term, the Governor of the state can call for a special election to elect a replacement. This is in stark contrast to the Senate where the state governor the senator represented can appoint a replacement. However, with the election just a few short months away, the Governor may not decide to hold a special election.
